Job

You probably think
this book’s about Job
But into the heavens
is where we will probe
We come in on a scene
between God and the devil
A charge against man
is what he would level
Does man only care
About what he was given?
Does his love depend
on every provision?
The devil charged God
with of all kinds of things,
From Bribing his kids
to being a horrible king,
Were these charges true
or would he prove to be wrong
As angels watched on
there was quite a throng
They all took their stations
on their meeting day
Jehovah inquired
in his very own way
He knew quite well
where Satan had been
But God wanted to hear
it directly from him.
Satan confessed to
roaming the earth
Obsessed with these men
he’d been since their birth
He Jealously craved
what he didn’t deserve
Worship and honor
For God were reserved
Jehovah loved Job
there’s no doubt about that,
Faithful and upright
He feared to do bad
Satan told God
That Job didn’t love him
His faith he’d give up
In behalf of his skin
Permission was given
To test the man out
Only to kill him
he wasn’t allowed
Job had no idea
The troubles he faced
Resulted from satan’s
Fall from God’s grace
One after another
He’d learn of each woe
As one messenger came
Another would go
Livestock and servants
Each one by one
Culminating with
The loss of his sons
Satan didn’t give up
On torturing him
When this didn’t work
He moved on to his skin
This poor man was given
A disease as we know
He was covered with boils
from head to toe
He scraped at his sores
In the ashes he’d lie
His wife told him
To curse God and die
With Job’s failing health
His future looked grim
To top it all off
His friends turned on him
Descending from Abraham
Eliphaz came
Through Esau’s line
Came his family name
The Devil’s influence
On him was strong
He accused Job
Of doing wrong
Job tries to defend
Himself on that day
But he wouldn’t blame God
That wasn’t his way
Job said that he wished
He had never been born
The pain he was in
He looked so forlorn.
Bildad the Shuhite
Was Abraham’s kin
From the line of Keturah
Through Shuah he’d been
He should have relied
On Jehovah as well
Instead on the negative
He chose to dwell
He accused Job’s children
Of doing wrong
And didn’t put blame
Where it really belonged
Zophar was third
In this group of friends
To speak of Job’s sins
And refute his defense
While it is true
That Jehovah hates sin
Were all of these trials
Really from him?
Elihu had joined
this group while they sat
But he remained silent
Till the end of their chat
When it was finally
his turn to speak
He defended our God
His words were not weak
He put Job in his place
Brought him to his senses
This wasn’t the time
For being defensive
God is far greater
Than mortal man
For all of us are
The work of his hands
Stop and consider
His wonderful works
The skies and the clouds
The wind and the birds
Who is mere man
To think we know better
Than the one who designed
Our wonderful weather
Jehovah was listening
Now he would demand
“Tell me if you think
That you understand”
“Who is the one that
Has caused your birth?
Where were you at
When I founded the earth?”
“When the morning stars
Cried out so joyfully
The sons of the true God
Applauded with glee”
When Jehovah had finished
And all had been said
Job repented in ashes
And he hung his head
Job acknowledged that he
Lacked understanding
And wished that he
Had been less demanding
Jehovah was eager
To return him to health
And he planned to double
All of Job’s wealth
There was one more thing
For him to do
Before this ordeal
Was finally through
A prayer and a sacrifice
In behalf of his friends
Was required by God
To call it the end
Job humbled himself
And accepted this task
He was willing to do
What his God would ask
The blessings that came
For Job and his wife
He was given more children
And a wonderful life
In the near future
When his life is restored
We’ll get to meet him
And the kids he adored
